Franklin Maltby, 89, Civil war veteran, who knew Abraham Lincoln
when the emancipator operated a general store in Salem, died at 8:30
a.m. Saturday, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. B.E.Whitman, 108

Mr. Maltby had been in ill health a month, and bedfast the last

the Union army as a private in Company A, 152nd infantry, which
company was once struck by lightning while drilling. Several were
killed by the bolt and Mr. Maltby was slightly injured. He was a
member of the William T. Sherman post of the G.A.R., Bloomington.
As a small boy he often sat on Lincoln's knee, and as he grew
older, he knew the former president well, he frequently related.
Shortly after his marriage, Mr. Maltby removed to Warren County
and engaged in farming until 30 years ago when he retired. He removed
to Normal in 1923, where he had lived since. His wife died
here in 1926.
Surviving are Mrs. Whitman, a son Lawrence of Abingdon, and three
